Vintage Linens Pincushion-Another Pic Tutorial

Another mostly all picture tutorial guiding you step by step through making a vintage linens hexagon (or really any shape you choose) pincushion. Let me know in the Comments section if you have questions. The purple marking pen I’m using-it’s both an air and water erasable by Leonis.

You can find Ground Walnut Shells at a Pet Store such as Petco and/or PetSmart. Look for them in the Reptile section. If you are afraid of the Reptile section, ask an employee to venture into the forbidden zone… 🤣

    No one else is asking questions …. I have a few: 1) did you remove the bit of ‘hem’ left from the original cut? It appears in several photos and then it’s difficult to tell.

    2) What’s special about walnut shells? Could buckwheat shells work? Is this intended as a pin cushion or simply a ‘pretty’?

    3) The piece between the top and bottom hexagons… is that simply a straight piece long enough to go all the way around? (It’s pieced so I’m not quite sure.)

    1. Hi Carol, good questions!
      1. Yes, I cut away the bit of hem, I cut the batting and backing piece a bit larger than the hexagon do deal with a) the shrinking that always takes place with machine quilting and b) to give my hands-fingers more of an area to grip when moving the “sandwich” around under the needle.
      2. I’ve never dealt with buckwheat shells so have no idea if they would work. I like the weight of the ground walnut shells.
      And finally 3. Yes, the piece that forms the sides is simply a straight piece. Why is mine pieced, because I didn’t use the tried and true: measure twice-cut once!! Haha!!

  3. These are so pretty. I even have linens on hand just waiting to be used. Even without instructions I can follow this, I think. So did you have to have someone get your crushed walnuts for you? I had things show up on my memories feed on Facebook about the hurricane. I did think of you and what everyone went through. So good to be this many years out.
